Technical and business writing

Camtasia sample

I  have over 25 years of experience as a writer and editor working with executives, engineers, programmers, artists, subject matter experts, and clients to create a variety of projects. My writing background includes technical, instructional, and marketing content distributed via print, Web, CD, and online (Camtasia, Captivate).

Currently I am developing training and documentation materials for Red Hat. Before that I wrote, and produced the operating and troubleshooting procedures used by Palm/HP call center agents to support webOS devices (RIP). Troubleshooting was created as a structured, interactive flow of branching questions and answers that guided agents to resolve issues. I was hired at Palm to edit its style guide and then worked on device help systems and user guides before becoming the lead writer on support content.

Other recent work has included instructional design, writing, and editing for Apple, Cisco, Gap, Google, HP, Kaiser, Network Appliance, Palm, Savi Technology, and Red Hat.

I've worked independently since 2003. Prior experience included being a senior documentation manager at Oracle Corporation, where I trained and managed a ten-person Indian writing team that developed the documentation and training for a product for higher-education that automated all university-student interactions. I also wrote and edited technical and marketing white papers and data sheets for division products, and collaborated on two business books written by executive vice president.

While with the TechniGroup, I managed technical documentation projects, which included task analysis, scheduling, writing, editing, and coordinating in-house production and client-review cycles. I was the editor on all other projects and was also in charge of electronic publishing.

At Poppe Tyson Interactive in Palo Alto, I developed creative concepts and wrote production scripts and copy for animated/interactive product demonstrations, simulations, and tutorials, as well as marketing and sales presentations. Working directly with clients during script development and with artists and programmers during production, I wrote and produced a 4-hour CBT on firewalls for IBM sales personnel, tutorials for Logitech scanners, and 1-hour overview and simulation of the Forté distributed application development environment.

I have a B.A. in English from the University of Michigan. I live in La Honda, CA, in the Santa Cruz Mountains south of San Francisco.
